The Goldies Cymru Schools Programme has been running in
Wales for a number of years but during Covid this work was
severely impacted. Prior to the pandemic, the National Lottery Education Category award winning 'Armistice Cantata'grew out of a creative project involving teachers and their pupils in schools in Cardiff commemorating the end of the first World War.

The programme brought about a real sense of authentic learning about the impact that WW1 had on Cardiff and its residents. Schools involved went on to perform at the National Service of Remembrance in St David’s Hall, Chapter Arts Centre and many other venues in South Wales.  Since then, the charity and the older people have supported further learning through its playground games project and links to living history.

Now, in 2023 the charity is excited to bring to you a new project.  The programme focuses on belonging and bringing a sense of 'Cynefin' to your school with   to bring older people into your community, to play, learn and work together and to find enjoyment in spending time together.

It is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Here Comes The Sun

'Here Comes The Sun' - a Sing & Sign Inter-generational project with the young people and parents of Heol Goffa School.
Goldies Cymru bringing together the generations.

A lovely testimonial

A couple who have been attending the Goldies sessions at Heol Goffa school since the start had this to say about their experience:

We love going to Ysgol Heol Goffa on their 'Oldies' days, we leave with a warm feeling in our hearts and are left with images of laughing pupils enjoying themselves

The warmth we feel when we walk into Ysgol Heol Goffa is overpowering.

The session last approximately 1 hour and in that time we get a chance to dance, sing and chat with pupils. There are pupils in wheelchairs that are taken round by the guests to the beat of the music.

Pupils are very welcoming and as we've been going there for a few months some have kept a seat for us!

Conwy Intergenerational Day - July 2024

A lovely intergenerational event took place on 16 July at The United Reformed Church in Rhos on Sea.

Goldies Cymru, Conwy Wellbeing Team (Conwy Council) & Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos (the local primary school) came together for a morning of song, dance and lots of smiles. It was such a success that the school and council are already discussing the next event they can run with the Goldies so hopefully it is the start of something regular. Monthly sessions are already set up in Llanrwst and Rhos on Sea and new sessions are ready to launch in the near future.

Shelley Richardson, from the Conwy wellbeing team said, "The morning was a great success, everyone really enjoyed the session and got involved with the singing and movements. We had 22 children attend and 32 adults. It was great to see one grandparent dancing with her granddaughter.

One of the mums of a child in the choir thanked us for the event and said this was the first time that she had ever heard her daughter sing as she never sings at home.

Thank you to Goldies for providing all the refreshments, these went down very well with both children and adults. The adults were delighted with their complementary Goldies T-Shirts. A great intergenerational morning"

Cardiff Intergenerational Day - July 2024

Picture

Wednesday July 10 and the weather was kind at Insole Court in Cardiff, the venue for a brilliant Schools Intergenerational Day. Children from Rhiwbeina Primary School, St Patricks RC Primary School, Ysgol Glan Ceubal, Bryn Celyn Primary School and St John Lloyd RC Primary School took part entertaining the 80 Goldies from a number of Cardiff sessions. The day included a number of singing sessions led by our local session leaders. Pictured here they are (left to right) Andy, Cheryl, Geoff,  Susanna, Shelley and Pat.  The day was part of the Goldies Cymru Schools project supported by the Wales Heritage Lottery and The Moondance Foundation.

“Everyone had a brilliant time and we’re so grateful for the time the schools put in rehearsing their songs. It’s special when we bring together the Young with the Young at Heart.”
Didn't we have a lovely time ..... the day we went to the Cardiff intergenerational day!

A thank you card received from the Rhydypennau Goldies

Bringing together the Young with the Young at Heart

The new primary schools intergenerational programme was launched on October 27 at Rhiwbeina Primary School in Cardiff.

Since launching eight years ago the Goldies Cymru Charity have brought songs and smiles to older isolated people across South Wales. These take place in Libraries, community rooms and Church halls and there are now over 60 sessions led by dedicated freelance leaders.

Sixty children from Rhiwbeina Primary School together with 30 older folk who attend the Rhiwbeina Goldies session joined together in song to launch the new project. It was introduced by Grenville Jones, Goldies founder, with exuberant singing led by Steffan Davies, Children’s and Welsh Librarian from Cardiff Hubs and Libraries.

Julie Hughes, Head of Investment at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, also attended the launch and praised the value of the school projects that have been led by the Goldies Cymru Charity in past years.
