Singing out in your Library

Libraries across South Wales are working with the charity Goldies Cymru to brighten the lives of older people through regular daytime boisterous FUN singalong sessions.

Goldies Cymru started in Cardiff six years ago with just six daytime fun Sing&Smile sessions. With the support of The Big Lottery Fund in Wales and Cardiff-based Moondance Foundation, by the end of 2019 there will be over 80 regular sessions taken by 15 freelance leaders. The introduction of groups meeting in libraries has developed in recent months, attracting considerable media attention.

Rachel Parry is Goldies Cymru programme leader in South Wales, she said;

“The library sessions have really taken off and hundreds now attend as we work with more and more local authorities and councils. As a charity we try to give people who may lead lonely lives, opportunities to get out, meet with others and have a good old-fashioned sing song!

“One of our stand-out session takes place at Rhydypennau Library where it is led by Sue Thomas. It was chosen by the National Lottery and featured in a broadcast illustrating how Lottery funding supports community projects. Over 50 people attend to sing the songs of the 50s and more.”
